Birds and Beasts of Tanzania: A Photographic Safari through East Africa
Our November 8th meeting will feature Evergreen Camera Club member Ron Belak, who will present “Birds and Beasts of Tanzania.” Ron and Peg Linn went on a safari in 2016 that took them through Taranguire and Lake Manyara National Parks, Ngorongoro Crater, Oldupai Gorge and the Serengeti National Park. Ron has selected the best from more than 4,000 photos he shot of zebra, elephants, giraffes, wildebeests, buffalo, lions, cheetahs, warthogs, hyenas, jackals, hippos, monkeys, baboons and many species of antelope, as well as over 70 species of birds. The birds in Africa are often colorful and/or large, enabling excellent opportunities for photographs. Ron will also share a video of lions on their kills, elephants and giraffes elegantly promenading across the plains, hippos bathing and wildebeest on their historic migration across the Mara River. Learn about the ecosystems where these creatures live, see where Mary and Louis Leakey discovered remains of some of the earliest hominids and discover where the Maasai raise cattle and call home. Ron will also share tips on photographing wildlife.
Ron, a retired geologist and natural resource analyst, has written about 70 magazine articles and published over 500 photographs in Colorado Outdoors magazine (the official publication of Colorado Parks and Wildlife) in the past 25 years. His work has also appeared inFly Fisherman, American Angler and Colorado Expression magazines. Ron’s video and several of his African pictures won awards at the 2017 competition of the Rocky Mountain Outdoors Writers and Photographers.
