She’ll talk through some of the considerations for purchasing a drone for photography and discuss regulations and ethics around flying. March 11th General Meeting: Deanna Beutler —
The Lives and Habits of Owls in the Wild

by ecc

Note: this event was originally scheduled for February 12 but had to be canceled due to snow, a perennial consequence of being in Evergreen

Wednesday, March 11 at 7:00 pm (6:30 social time)
Evergreen Fire and Rescue
1802 Bergen Parkway, Evergreen, CO

Pre-meeting Dinner 5:30 pm at
Wild Game
1802 Bergen Parkway

Deanna Beutler has spent the past 16 years hiking and photographing wildlife. She found her first owl nest in 2004 and the love of owls and photographing them has grown from there, along with her knowledge of owls.

She worked for “Wild Wings Environmental Education” from 2013 to 2018, where she worked with owls, hawks and falcons. While there, she manned informational booths, taught at schools, libraries, retirement centers, camps, special events, fundraisers and photo shoots. The organization’s goal was to teach the public how to protect these birds, their environment and raise money for the care of injured birds of prey.

She has taught classes at nature centers and Audubon Society events on the lives of owls and how to find them. She has served as a wildlife and owl guide for people throughout Colorado and as far away as Japan. Her photos were selected in the “Top 250” in Denver Audubon Society’s “Share the View International” photography contest 5 years in a row and she spoke at the Share the View International Gala. She has won 1st and 2nd place in several local photo contests. She has had 10 of her photos displayed on park signs and others published in magazines and books.
She also helps with the rescue of birds and animals.

Doors open at 6:30 for socializing. Members, guests and students welcome!
Join us for dinner at 5:15 with Deanna (by RSVP only)

January 2020 T&T: African Photography Trip Review with Eric Esau

by ecc

Would you like to travel to Africa, and not cost you less than a trip to Disney’s Animal Kingdom resort?

Our Evergreen camera club president Eric Esau traveled to Uganda last July and spent $8,500 for three people for 15 days. They went on multiple safaris in four different national parks and wildlife sanctuaries. The amount of wildlife they saw and photographed was amazing.

Eric is going to talk about how he did it, what to see and the best places they visited. He will talk about more expensive lodging options as well as super budget lodging. They did a mid-range tour and their accommodations were mid-range and very nice.

Other things he will talk about: How to hire a guide and tour company, how much to tip, where to eat, and what to avoid. He’ll talk about logistics, medical precautions, and bugs (There are not as many as you think). Come and learn about how you can do that bucket list trip you have always wanted to do.
Doors open at 6:30 pm for social time.

Most nature photographers know that Bosque del Apache is one of the best places in the world for bird photography, especially birds in flight. Bosque, however, is so much more than that. It’s an oasis in the middle of the Chihuahuan Desert that attracts a wide range of wildlife, and much of it has become relatively tolerant of visitors. This presentation will cover the birds and other animals that winter here, as well as how to photograph them.

Cathy and Gordon Illg have been full time nature photographers since 2000. Their work is widely published and includes numerous covers of magazines like Backpacker, Defenders, National Geographic Kids, Ranger Rick and National Wildlife. Several of their images decorate the tails of Frontier Airlines’ jets, and they’ve done well in photo contests, the highlight of which was being flown to London to accept awards in the Wildlife Photographer of the Year Contest. They were recognized for their work with endangered species in Canon’s Wildlife As Canon Sees It ad in National Geographic.
Both of their first two books, Dynamic Wildlife Photography and Worshiping With A Camera, have been well received, and for the past 18 years their livelihood has been dependent upon their ability to share the magic of wild things and wild places with other photographers.

Join us for dinner with the speakers and other ECC members. Details and sign up on a separate Meetup posting.

Join us in our annual effort to decorate the display wall of the Evergreen Library with the beautiful work of our member photographers.  All members are encouraged to display their work.  If you have works that aren’t mounted, we provide a free session with mounting materials and tools.  As we didn’t get that many participants at our first mounting session, a second one has been scheduled – check the other events on this site for info.

The ECC Evergreen Library Exhibit set up will be at 9:00 am on December 2. Please bring photos that you wish to exhibit to that library at 9:00 am.
